Description

The Prankerd double tombstones, dating from the 18th century, are located in the churchyard, 6 metres south-southeast of the south door of the Church of St John Evangelist. Made of Ham stone, these tombstones are positioned at each end of a large flagstone. Each tombstone measures 1.2 metres long, 750 millimetres high, and 100 millimetres thick, featuring chamfered back edges.

The eastern stone has two square panels, while the western stone has shallower rectangular panels that are flanked by outer floral filasters and plain central pilasters topped with fleur-de-lys capitals. Both stones have double semi-circular arched heads that contain angel heads, with outer scrolls and scroll and rose centre pieces. The eastern stone is a later version of the western stone. The eastern stone commemorates John Prankerd, who died in 1759, and Martha, who died in approximately 1767. The western stone commemorates John and Elizabeth Prankerd, who died in 1700.
