Description
The stable block, located about 70 metres south-west of Montacute House, is a 19th-century structure that incorporates some earlier elements. It is built from Ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with coped gables topped by obelisk finials. The building has a 'U'-shaped plan and is single-storey.
The east range serves as the central portion, which is plain and includes a central gabled throughway with a four-centre-arched opening. Above this archway is a carved coat of arms dated 1598, flanked by shell-hood niches. There are two additional shell-hood niches in the side walls of the throughway, along with two moulded cambered-arched doorways set in rectangular recesses. The west side of the throughway mirrors the arch on the east, featuring a circular plaque above and shell-hood recesses on either side. Each side of the building has three bays of two-light hollow-chamfer mullioned and transomed windows set in wave-mould recesses without labels. The structure extends westward with five bays that match the east range, with the first two bays also having similar windows.
The north range consists of three open wagon sheds, while the south range includes a coach-house opening that is now partly boarded up, followed by two cambered-arched doorways with sidelights. Inside the east range, horse-boxes remain, with feed-lofts situated above.
A stable yard with stables and a coach house is indicated on a rough survey from 1782, but the entire structure was likely rebuilt between 1845 and 1852.
