Description

This description is for a pair of arched gateways and a connecting wall that are part of the former rectory, located next to No. 25 on Town Street in Shepton Mallet. The eastern archway dates back to around 1600, while the western archway and the connecting wall were constructed around 1800. Both archways are made of dressed stone. The eastern archway opens directly onto Town Street and features a 4-centred head with quirked-ogee mouldings and decorative spandrels. The western archway also has a 4-centred design with roll-moulding. The two archways are linked by a high-quality ashlared Doulting Limestone wall to the north, which is part of No. 25 Town Street.
