Description

The Holcombe War Memorial is a First World War memorial cross located in the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew in Holcombe, Somerset. It was created around 1920 and includes later additions and alterations from the Second World War after 1945.

Constructed from sandstone, the memorial features bronze plaques. The wheelhead cross is set on a rectangular plinth and platform, facing west. The east and west faces display the wheelhead cross, which is adorned with trefoil tracery in each quadrant. The arms of the cross have hollow chamfers along the edges, and the shaft is tapered. The plinth is topped with a simple cyma moulding.

On the west face, a rectangular bronze plaque reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM, HONOUR / AND RIGHT." Below this, the names of the fallen from the First World War are inscribed along with their regiments and dates of death. Further down, it states: "IN CHRIST SHALL ALL BE MADE ALIVE / 1 COR. XV22."

The plaque on the north face commemorates those who served in the Second World War, stating: "IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF HOLCOMBE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY DURING / THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945," followed by the names of the fallen, their service details, and ages, which range from 19 to 23. The other two sides of the plinth remain blank.
