Description

No. 42 Hurst is a house and bakery built in the early 19th century, with an early 20th-century addition. It is constructed from cut and squared ham stone and features a Welsh slate roof with a plain north gable and a brick chimney stack. The building is two storeys high and has two bays.

On the ground floor, the first bay has a 3-light hollow-chamfer mullioned window set in a shallow recess, without a label. Above this, there are simple 3-light and 2-light casements. The second bay has a 20th-century porch made of ashlar and Welsh slate, which includes a late 20th-century door and side window.

Attached to the north gable is the bakery, which is also made of ashlar and has a double Roman clay tile roof. This section is two storeys and has two bays as well, featuring 2-light casements above and timber garage doors in the lower bay of the first bay. Between the upper windows, there is a stone plaque inscribed 'HAC 1922', which stands for H.A. Chant and Son, the family bakers who were still operating there as of June 1985. The interior has not been seen. This building is included primarily for its group value within a row of early 19th-century houses of interest.
