Description

The Garden Sculpture, located 20 metres north of the porch to Shanks House, is a stone garden ornament that likely dates from the 18th century. It was relocated to this house in the 1930s. The sculpture features a high base plinth measuring about 800 millimetres square, which supports a cuboid base with a cornice mould and a block at the top. At the centre, there is a group of four cherubs draped with swags over their shoulders, each carrying a basket of fruits, all set on a central shaft. The entire piece is topped with a full pineapple surrounded by leaves, reaching a height of about 3 metres. Apart from the plinth, this sculpture closely resembles one of the finials from 1776 that adorned the gateway of Basildon Park in Berkshire and is likely the work of Carr of York.
