CUCKLINGTON CP LONG LANE The Garden Sculpture, 20 metres North of Porch to Shanks House

-

GV II*

Stone garden ornament. Probably C18, relocated to this house in 1930s. Stone, with high base plinth about 800 square, then cuboid base with cornice mould and block at top; then group of 4 cherubs with swags over shoulders carrying basket of fruits, set also on central shaft - the whole topped with a full pineapple with leaves, in all about 3 metres high. Apart from the plinth, this is identical to one of the 1776 finials to the gateway of Basildon Park, Berkshire, and is probably the work of Carr of York. (Pevsner, Buildings of England, Berkshire; and other works illustrating the Basildon Park gateway).
