Description

Sunnyside, located at 59 Fore Street, is a house built in the 18th century or early 19th century, which has been converted for shop use on the ground floor.

The building is finished in incised stucco and has a slate roof with a brick gable-end stack on the west side. It stands two storeys tall with a rectangular, single-depth plan.

The front elevation facing Fore Street features three bays and has a pitched roof that is hidden behind a plain, coped parapet. The windows are evenly spaced and consist of two-over-two timber sashes. All but the central first-floor window, which may be older, are horned and likely date from the late 19th century. The main entrance is centrally located on the ground floor and features a six-panel door with glazing in the upper four panels, set within a timber doorcase that has simple slender pilasters, panelled reveals, and a shallow cornice. Square lead hopper heads and downpipes are positioned at both ends of the building. The west gable wall includes two ground-floor windows that are boarded over, along with a late 20th-century three-light window on the first floor. The rear elevation is rendered and has an entrance with a modern steel door, as well as a larger opening on the far left fitted with a modern steel roller shutter door. There are two first-floor windows; one is a 20th-century two-light casement, while the other is boarded over.

Inside, the ground floor has been altered for the shop conversion, with no fireplaces remaining and most joinery being modern. The staircase, which seems to be a later addition, is located against the back wall of the building. The original roof timbers include A-frame trusses with lapped yokes and trenched purlins, although some rafters have been replaced later.
