Description

The gate pier and forecourt railings to Essex House were built in the mid-18th century. They are made of Ham Hill stone and feature a tall, slender design with chamfered rustication on a cube-shaped plinth. The structure includes a plain frieze that is moulded at both the top and bottom, supporting a moulded pyramidal cap topped with a ball finial. The railings are designed with long and short sections that have spearhead ends, and there are urn finials on the supports, which rest on a level stone plinth that ramps up at the base to the left. The gate is functional.
