Description

This building in Chard began as a Wesleyan chapel, constructed around 1814. It was later used by Wesleyan Reformers around 1850 and then returned to the Wesleyans in 1880 before being superseded around 1894. The building is now a shop. It is stuccoed with stone hoodmoulds over pointed arches, and has a coping to the front-facing gable, all topped with a slate roof. The facade is set back from the street, with a shopfront added around 1960 that fills the space. The first floor has a tall, central window with 4 rows of 6 panes, flanked by two wider, lower windows with 5 rows of 3 panes each. All the windows have intersecting glazing bars within the Gothic arches. The interior retains an original gallery around three sides, supported by chamfered square wooden columns. The staircase, featuring a turned newel, has been repositioned.
