Description
This is an 18th-century milestone made of Doulting stone, located near Moor Wood Cottage. The pillar measures 350 mm wide by 220 mm at the base, tapering to 300 mm by 200 mm, and stands 1 metre high with a triangular top. All edges are chamfered. The inscription on the milestone reads "1 Mile-From-Redlynch-HOUSE." It is situated on a private coach road that connected Redlynch House, which belonged to Lord Ilchester in the 18th century, and Stourhead in Wiltshire, owned by the Hoares. This road was used by King George III during his frequent visits to Redlynch on his way to Weymouth.
