Description

The West Block, formerly a stable at Redlynch Park House, is a building from the first half of the 18th century that was modified in 1913. It was constructed by Nathaniel Ireson of Wincanton for Lord Ilchester. The structure is made of local stone that has been cut and squared, with dressings of Doulting stone. It features a hipped Welsh slate roof with stone slate base courses, located behind parapets on the south and east faces, and has red brick chimney stacks.

The building has a 'U'-plan layout and stands two storeys tall with attics. The south facade consists of 11 bays, with the outer pairs projecting slightly. Architectural details include a plinth, a lower cill course, an eaves band course, and panelled solid parapets, along with rusticated quoins. The ground floor has 12-pane casement windows, with the top halves pivoted, all set in plain ashlar surrounds with flat triple keystoned heads. Above these are 6-light sash windows in plain surrounds.

A notable feature is the clock tower at the center of the roof, which has a lead-covered cuboid base and a clock dial on the south side. The tower is topped with an octagonal lead-roofed timber bell turret that is open on four main faces and has a small windvane. There are lead rainwater stackheads, one of which on the east side is dated 1902. The windows on the west face have simple frames, with cruciform designs below and almost square leaded panes, likely the original form. At the north end of the first floor, there is a plain door with hoisting tackle above it, and similar leaded windows can be found in the inner courtyard. The interiors are not accessible, and as of October 1983, the block is undergoing conversion to flats.
