Description

Monksmead is a lodge built in the 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with Doulting stone dressings and a hipped stone slate roof, featuring brick chimney stacks. The building has a "U"-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall, with single-storey projecting wings over basements and a single bay in between. The outer wings have stone plinths, pilasters, and eaves courses, and each wing contains a pair of large cruciform casement windows with leaded lights set in plain ashlar surrounds. Between the wings is a 20th-century porch with a plain clay tile roof and a simple door, above which is a hexagonal window surround for a small two-light casement. The sides of the building feature matching windows with dormers above, while there is a 20th-century addition at the rear. This lodge is an unusual type, and while an inn called "The Bear" was noted to exist in 1749 and ceased by 1798, it was likely located on the opposite site, which is not listed. Monksmead may have been an estate building of Redlynch and possibly designed by Nathaniel Ireson.
