Description

The Penny Tombstone, located in the churchyard 11 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, dates from the late 17th century. It is made of ham stone and consists of a single slab that is approximately 600mm high, 1.1 metres wide, and nearly 100mm thick. The west face features three shallow segmental arched panels with inscriptions. The left panel reads "HEWE/PENNY/DYED/FEBRVAR/4 1688," the centre panel states "----/PENNY/ DYED/SEP 20/1681," and the right panel says "MOSES/PENNY/DYED/NOVEM/BER 1691." This tombstone is a rare survival for its date in this part of the county.
