Description

This is a medieval chest tomb located 1 metre east of the chancel in the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It dates from the early 15th century and is made of Ham stone. The tomb features a moulded base and a flat top with deep gothic moulded coving. The west end is plain, while the sides have six traceried panels with cusped ogee heads and trefoils. The east end includes four half-height panels, with an inverted 'T' panel that was likely intended for a brass plate, which is now missing, flanked by trefoils and ogee arched panels. It is said to have originally contained the headless effigy of an abbot. The tomb was relocated after being discovered on the site of the Abbey during excavations in 1873.
