Description

The Roman Cement Mill and Mill House, dating from the 18th century, is constructed from coursed squared stone and features a pantiled roof that has been correctly restored. The building has stone copings and stepped square kneelers, with a rebuilt brick stack at the right end. It stands two storeys high and comprises three bays in the main building, alongside a cross-gabled left mill wing that is two bays wide. The upper part of the main building serves as a house.

An external stack is positioned between the two left bays of the main building, offset at eaves level. To the right of this stack is a double boarded door that leads onto a low platform accessed by three steps, with a semi-circular relieving arch above. The ground floor is otherwise blank, while the first floor features three replaced sash windows with glazing bars set in wooden architraves, with modern small-paned casements behind.

The cross wing, noted to be in a ruinous state at the time of survey, has boarded openings and a Dutch door accessed by five stone steps. There is also a pent left wheelhouse extension and a front projection that includes wagon entrances. Inside the mill building, queen post roof trusses are present, and while the wheel housing and shaft remain, the wheel itself has been removed.
