Description
Laurel Cottage and Beech Cottage are a pair of early to mid-18th century cottages, altered in the early 19th century. They are located on the south side of East Row in Sandsend. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared tooled stone, with Beech Cottage having a rendered facade. They have pantiled and Welsh slate roofs of a high pitch, each with a right-end chimney, the latter largely rebuilt on Beech Cottage. Later 19th-century gabled dormers, one on each cottage, are topped with bargeboards.
Each cottage is two storeys high and has two windows. Laurel Cottage has early 19th-century sash windows on the first floor, a later 19th-century sash window below, and a modern glazed door, all beneath wide lintels with keystones. Beech Cottage features later 19th-century sash windows and a four-panel door with a glazed top section.
Inside Laurel Cottage, there are cupboards flanking the fireplace, one dating from the 18th century and one from the early 19th century, along with other woodwork dating from the early 19th century, including a staircase.
