Description
This lime kiln, likely built in the 18th century, is located to the north of the Roman Cement Mill in Sandsend. It is constructed from coursed squared stone and is built into the bank. The kiln has a half-octagonal shape with a parapet and features three fire holes that are corbelled up to a steep triangular shape. The central fire hole still retains its iron furnace doors, as does the left fire hole, which also has brick fire-backs. The walls on either side of the kiln are plain, with the left side featuring three battered buttresses and incorporating a small shed along with a flight of steps that provide access to the top of the kiln. The right abutment curves around the hill slope and also includes steps leading to the upper level.
