Description
The Post Office, built in 1909, is a three-storey building designed in the Baroque Revival style. It features red brick construction with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, along with a polished flush marble plinth. The street-facing side has 11 windows, with a central section projecting slightly and consisting of five windows, flanked by two-window side wings and single-window pavilions at each end.
The central bay has a moulded ashlar doorway adorned with prominent keystones and Ionic columns that support a large segmental pediment, which includes a plaque inscribed with "POST OFFICE 1909." Above this, giant Ionic pilasters hold a steep pediment, featuring a tall glazing bar sash with a prominent keystone and segmental pediment, along with a smaller glazing bar sash above in a simpler moulded surround.
On either side of the central bay, there are two glazing bar sashes set in complex moulded surrounds. The first floor has two glazing bar sashes with keystones and pediments, while the second floor features smaller glazing bar sashes with keystones between the windows. The building is further enhanced by giant banded pilasters topped with a deep dentilated cornice and a brick parapet. The pavilions have round-headed ashlar arches with prominent keystones on the ground floor, similar sashes above with triangular pediments, and are topped with circular windows, all set in a shallow curve with banded quoins and scrolled tops.
