Description

The Post Office, built between 1901 and 1903 and later altered, is designed in a mixed Renaissance and Jacobean style. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with slate roofs and features a large rectangular plan. The building has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a symmetrical façade that includes one central bay and five outer bays that project slightly forward, topped with tall shaped gables.

The ground floor is distinguished by a central doorway that is sheltered by a porch featuring banded pilasters and a segmental pediment with decorative carving. Large round-headed windows with keyed moulded heads flank the entrance. On the first floor, there are five cross-windows in the centre, framed by pilastered and pedimented architraves, while the ends have six-light windows with mullions and transoms, also featuring raised pilastered architraves linked to similar windows above. The friezes above these windows are inscribed with "ER". The second floor continues the theme with similar transomed windows.

The elaborately ornamented shaped gables include Diocletian windows, and the steeply-pitched roof is punctuated by five dormers with semicircular pediments. The gable walls maintain a similar style, and the long ranges of nine windows extend beyond, featuring round-headed windows on the ground floor and transomed six-light windows above. The east side of the building is regular, while the west side is more elaborately articulated, showcasing an open-segmental pediment over the centre, which includes a shield of arms. The basement is protected by attached wrought-iron railings. The rear of the building is covered by the former Fish Market.
