Description

This is a post office dated 1896, built in a symmetrical, gabled Baroque style. It is located at 10-12 Bishop Street, Rothesay and stands two storeys high with a single-storey, gabled pavilion projecting to the outer right. The principal elevations are faced in sandstone ashlar, while the rear is in bonded brick. The building features a raised base course, an architraved string course and cill course, corniced eaves, and a balustraded parapet topped by splayed pediments. Fluted Ionic pilasters are present at ground level, and simpler Doric pilasters at the first floor.

The east (entrance) elevation has a symmetrical arrangement. A central, two-leaf, timber panelled door is topped by a plate glass fanlight within an architraved surround, flanked by part-fluted pilasters on a raised plinth. A segmental-arched pediment with foliate carving sits above the door. Large, single windows are located at ground level in the two bays to the left and right of the entrance. There is a single door at ground level in the bay to the outer left, also with a fanlight and flanking pilasters. A single window sits above the entrance at the first floor, with bipartite windows in the bays to the left and right, and single windows in the remaining bays. A pedimented scrolled gable is centred above the parapet, bearing the inscription "AD 1896" within the frieze. The gable incorporates an armorial panel within a chamfered surround, flanked by Ionic pilasters and featuring a consoled keystone with an inset anthemion carving and urn-shaped finials.

The single-storey pavilion to the outer right has two bipartite windows at ground level, topped by a scrolled gable with flanking urn-shaped parapet finials and circular detailing between fluted pilasters. A raised keystone sits below a round-arched pediment ornamented with a tympanum relief and a ball-shaped finial.

The ground floor has border glazing; the first floor and the pavilion windows are timber casements with four panes to the upper sashes and plate glass to the lower sashes. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, with corniced ridge and apex stacks and circular cans.

The interior, last reviewed in 1996-7, includes a part-glazed timber vestibule door and a glazed counter.
