Description

The Statue of Fame and its pedestal, located approximately 35 metres north-east of the Priory, date from the early 18th century and were restored around 1985 by Andrew Naylor. The sculptor remains unknown. The statue is made of lead and stands on an ashlar pedestal. The overall height is about 3 metres, with the pedestal itself measuring approximately 1.8 metres. The rectangular pedestal features a moulded base, panelled sides, and a cornice that supports the lifesize figure of winged Fame, who holds a pipe and an olive branch. This statue is not in its original position and is part of a group of early 18th-century lead statues.
