Description

The Todd and Raine memorials are two tombstones located approximately two metres east of the porch of the Church of St James in Melsonby. They date from the early to mid-18th century and commemorate William and Mary Todd, and James Raine. The memorial for the Todds, situated to the south, features a slab with an inscription on the west side honoring William Todd, who died in 1727. This slab is decorated with a festoon and is topped by a crescent with a patera. The east side of the slab includes an inscription for Mary Todd, who died in 1746, along with other family members. The Raine memorial, located to the north, is a slab with an inscription on the east side commemorating John Raine, who died in 1764 and was a bookseller from Richmond. It has a roll-shaped top and a matching moulding that is broken in the center to frame a ball finial on a pedestal, accompanied by two paterae.
