Description

A group of three cottages, numbers 16, 18, and 20 East Road, Melsonby, were built in the mid to late 18th century. The cottages are constructed of rubble, with some parts roughcast, and have pantile roofs. They have two storeys and a 1:2:1 window arrangement on the first floor.

Number 16, on the right, has a roughcast front and a single-storey wing projecting forward, which was formerly used as a shop. The wing has a boarded door to the left, a 12-pane fixed-light window to the right, a brick chimney on the gable, and two windows on the return side. The main part of the property has a central part-glazed door, a 2-light casement window on the ground floor to the left, and a side-sliding sash window on the first floor. A raised verge is on the right side, with brick end stacks.

Number 18 is built of rubble and has a 20th-century six-panel door on the ground floor to the left. It has two side-sliding sash windows on both the ground and first floors, and a rebuilt brick stack at the right end. The doorway in number 18 originally gave access to a through passage, serving numbers 18 and 20, and is now incorporated into the building itself.

Number 20 is also of rubble construction. It has a slightly higher roofline, side-sliding sash windows on both floors, ashlar coping to the right, and a brick stack at the right end.

At the rear, across numbers 18 and part of 16, is a shared outshut with a catslide roof.
