Description

The Todd tomb, located approximately 7 metres south of the east end of the chancel of the Church of St Peter, is a chest tomb dating from around 1854. It commemorates John Todd of Halnaby Hall and is constructed from sandstone ashlar. The tomb features a moulded base and sides that are panelled with cusped Gothic tracery. Angels' heads serve as springers around the inscriptions on the sides, while coats of arms are displayed on the ends. The moulded gabled top includes a laurel wreath in the tympanum, and the effect of acroteria is achieved by half baluster shafts at the ends, which terminate the "roof" and are complemented by cusped panels.
