Description
The Burton Salmon War Memorial is a village roll of honour and war memorial, built in 1925, possibly designed by Robert “Mouseman” Thompson of Kilburn. It features an English oak frame set on a concrete base, topped with a slate roof.
The memorial is designed as a timber-framed shrine resembling a gabled lichgate, with the rear portal filled with memorial plaques and the other three sides enclosed by low balustrades. The tie-beam of the front gable is inscribed with the words “THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” Above the memorial plaques, another tie beam bears the inscription “THOSE WHO SERVED.” Below this tie beam, three original inscribed panels fill the timber framing. The flanking panels list 35 names in alphabetical order by surname, followed by initials. The central panel reads: “1914 + 1919 / TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / THIS PARISH WHO / FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR,” followed by four additional names.
Additionally, there is an oak plaque affixed to the balustrading, inscribed with “TO THOSE WHO SERVED 1939-1945 AND IN MEMORY OF A H WALLGATE WHO GAVE HIS LIFE,” which includes the names of 24 men and mentions “WOMEN’S SERVICES” followed by three more names, all listed in the format of initials and surnames, ordered alphabetically.
