Description

The coach house and stables at Byram Park date from the late 18th century and feature later additions and alterations. Designed by John Carr, the building is constructed of brick and sandstone, with an ashlar ground floor and dressings, partly rendered, and has a roof made of Welsh slate and asbestos. It is L-shaped and consists of two storeys.

The coach house range has seven bays and presents a symmetrical design with a three-bay center that projects forward in two stages, flanked by two-bay wings. The central round carriage arch is framed by a moulded archivolt, with round-arched window openings on either side, also set within moulded archivolts. The wings contain two round carriage arches with a continuous impost band above. The left arch is covered by a later outshut, while the right features double coach doors topped with a fanlight that has radial glazing bars. The first floor has six-pane sash windows with ashlar sills, set under flat arches made of gauged brick. The building is topped with a cornice, hipped roof, and ridge stacks.

The stables are similar in style but have three-bay wings. The ground floor features blind arcading that contains blocked round-arched stable openings, which have later infill of casement and sash windows. The first-floor openings are also blocked. The stables have a hipped roof and were noted to be disused and dilapidated at the time of inspection.
