Description
The Forest and Vale Hotel, formerly known as Nos. 1 and 2 Hungate, is a public house and hotel that incorporates two former cottages. It dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof on the main structure, while the former cottages have pantile roofs.
The main building is two storeys high with a five-window front plan, a stone plinth, rusticated quoins, and a moulded stone cornice at the eaves with a blocking course above. The central entrance features a stone doorcase with steps leading up, designed in the Tuscan order with three-quarter plain columns and a pedimented head. The door consists of six moulded panels and has a semicircular fanlight with radiating bars. On either side of the entrance are two 12-pane glazing bar sashes under stone lintels, with five similar sashes above.
The north side wing is also two storeys and has a three-window front, featuring a central blind window on each floor flanked by single 12-pane glazing bar sashes under stone lintels. The former cottages at the rear are now attached, with No. 1 on the left having its upper floor rebuilt in artificial stone blocks, while No. 2 on the right retains quoins and a coped gable. The street front has a pair of central doorways with half-glazed 20th-century doors. To the right, there is a four-pane sash with a timber lintel, and above it are two similar windows, with the one above the door being narrower. To the left, there is a two-light 20th-century casement, above which are two-light and single-light casements, and above again are smaller similar windows.
