Description
This is a row of five cottages located in Aldcliffe Village, built in the late 18th century and early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The cottages are constructed from sandstone rubble, featuring painted ashlar dressings, with the front having painted roughcast and the rear being slobbered and rendered. They have slate roofs and are generally two storeys high, although Nos. 4 and 5 are lower.
No. 1 has three small square windows on the ground floor and two above, all of which are two-light casements designed to resemble horizontal sliding sashes. There is a doorway to the left and a ridge chimney, along with a 20th-century addition at the left end. Nos. 2 and 3 are both single-fronted, with doorways to the right of their windows. No. 2 features a doorway with a stone lintel and a modern glazed door, along with one vertical-rectangular window on each floor, now both top-hung casements, and a chimney at the junction with No. 1 to the left. No. 3 has a recessed door with a raised plain surround, one square window on each floor to the left with similar surrounds, both now top-hung casements, an inserted attic dormer breaking the eaves, and a ridge chimney stack at the junction with No. 2 to the left.
Nos. 4 and 5, which are both single-fronted and of two low storeys, have doorways to the left and right respectively, both featuring chamfered surrounds and shaped lintels, with No. 4 displaying raised lettering that reads '1640'. Each has a square six-pane sash window with a raised plain surround on the ground floor, while No. 4 has a top-hung casement on the first floor that imitates these, and No. 5 has a four-pane sash. There is a ridge chimney at the junction of these two cottages.
