Farm building. Late C19. Probably by Paley and Austin. Squared coursed sandstone rubble with green slate roof. The main building has a wide-span roof with clerestorey ventilation. The upper part of its west wall is open, with 6 bays separated by square stone piers which support the roof trusses, and with the 2nd bay open to ground level to form a cart entrance. The east wall has a narrower ventilation gap below the eaves and the roof trusses are supported by timber posts. In the south gable wall there is a 2nd cart entrance. To the north is a single-storey portion which forms a link with a range running at right angles towards the east. The eastern end of this range is of 2 storeys and has its gable wall facing the road. This has a 1st-floor doorway approached by external stone steps with iron railings and with the half-hip of the roof continued downwards as a canopy carried on timber brackets. The north and south walls have 1st-floor window openings which project upwards above the eaves under hipped dormer roofs carried on timber brackets. To the south the area between this wing and the second wing which projects towards the east is covered by a C20 corrugated asbestos roof. HISTORY: built as part of the ancillary buildings to the Royal Albert Idiot Asylum, now the Royal Albert Hospital (qv), which was completed in 1873.
