Description
The Lodge to Royal Albert Hospital is a gateway and lodge built around 1873, designed by Paley and Austin. It features snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, two bands of red sandstone, and a green slate roof, showcasing the Gothic Revival style. The main part of the gateway is taller, with a wide pointed arch over the carriageway, which is chamfered in two orders, and a smaller roll-moulded pedestrian arch to the right, both fitted with wrought-iron gates.
On the first floor, there are three trefoiled single-light windows beneath a hipped roof adorned with lead finials and crested ridge tiles. A chimney to the right has two bands of red sandstone. Adjacent to the gateway is part of the lodge, which has lower eaves and features a stone canted bay window with three mullioned lights at the front and one on each side, all with shouldered arches. The right-hand gable is coped. Above the carriageway, between the wide arches, is a beamed timber floor. The lodge is accessed from the walkway, which is separated from the carriageway by two chamfered pointed arches. The right-hand gable wall includes a two-light stair window towards the right, with a quatrefoil below a pointed relieving arch, and a two-light window to the left that illuminates the upper storey.
This structure was built as the gateway to the Royal Albert Idiot Asylum, now known as the Royal Albert Hospital, which was completed in 1873.
