GV II

Gateway and lodge. c1873. Designed by Paley and Austin. Snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, 2 bands of red sandstone, and green slate roof. Gothic Revival style. Main part of gateway is taller, with a wide pointed arch over the carriageway, chamfered in 2 orders, and a smaller roll-moulded pedestrian arch to the right. Both have wrought-iron gates. On the 1st floor are 3 trefoiled single-light windows under a hipped roof with lead finials and crested ridge tiles. Chimney to right with 2 bands of red sandstone. To its right is a part of the lodge which has lower eaves above a stone canted bay window which has 3 mullioned lights to the front and one to each side, all with shouldered arches. The right-hand gable is coped. Above the carriageway between the wide arches is a beamed timber floor. The lodge is entered from the walkway, which is separated from the carriageway by 2 chamfered pointed arches. The right-hand gable wall has a 2-light stair window towards the right, with a quatrefoil below a pointed relieving arch, and a 2-light window to the left lighting the upper storey. HISTORY: built as the gateway to the Royal Albert Idiot Asylum, now the Royal Albert Hospital (qv), which was completed in 1873.
