Description

Carter Close is a range of six dwellings consisting of three buildings, dating from the early to late 18th century, with 19th-century alterations and extensions. The structures are built of coursed limestone rubble, with some brick and rendered outshuts and outbuildings, topped with a pantile roof and featuring brick stacks. Each dwelling is a two-storey, single-cell, direct-entry plan with rear service rooms, except for the center house, which has a lobby entry.

The buildings are irregularly arranged, with each having one bay and irregular quoins. The center house features a four-panel door beneath a rectangular, divided fanlight, while the other doors are boarded and accessed by flights of brick and stone steps. To the right of the center house is a 16-pane sash window, with a similar window on the first floor. The remaining windows are two-light horizontal sliding sashes, except for the house at the left end, where the window is positioned to the left of the door. All windows have shaped stone sills.

The center house and the house to the right have eared surrounds for doors and windows, with keyed wedge lintels on the first floor of the house to the right. The other lintels are milled. The buildings feature coped gables and kneelers, with ridge stacks placed variably.
