Description
Tregavarras Row comprises two pairs of attached houses, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century and retaining few later alterations. The construction is of slatestone rubble with banded brick dressings, topped with half-hipped slate roofs including crested ridge tiles. Each house has axial stacks with brick shafts.
The plan for each house is of two rooms, one to the front and one to the rear, with back-to-back fireplaces serving as their heat sources and entrances provided through side porches. A small, one-room service wing, originally a back kitchen, is located behind each house, built on a sloping site with a cellar beneath. These wings have gable ends and are served by gable end stacks.
The exterior presents a symmetrical 4-window front to each pair of houses. The first floor features two windows to the left and two to the right, all 19th-century 12-pane sashes with segmental arches in banded brick. Some windows are 20th-century replacements with segmental arches. A further pair of similar 12-pane sashes are centrally positioned. The sides are blind. The rear of the houses feature similar 12-pane sashes at ground and first floor levels. The service wings have gable ends with sashes to the outer sides and small lean-to additions on the inner sides; some rear windows are 20th-century replacements.
The interior was only partially inspected, but includes a straight staircase along the outer side of the rear entrance passage.
