Description

The former stables and coach-house, located approximately 100 metres north-west of Denton Park, were built in 1776 by John Carr for Sir James Ibbetson. They have since been converted into residences around 1980. The building is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and features a grey slate roof. It consists of 15 bays, primarily single-storey, except for bays 4, 5, 11, and 12, which rise to two storeys and form the slightly projecting end walls of 5-bay cross wings that extend to the rear, enclosing a former courtyard that is now partly glazed.

The ground floor includes 20th-century doors in bays 5 and 11, featuring fanlights, along with round-arched windows with glazing bar sashes throughout, all set within a shallow blind arcade of round-headed arches with raised impost bands. The central five bays are adorned with a balustrade supported by vase balusters. An eaves band runs across the two-storey wings at first-floor level. Above the cross wings, there are two 20th-century glazing bar casements beneath flat lintels, complemented by a sill band. The building has a hipped roof with inserted stacks on the far left and in the left and right bays. The rear mirrors the front with round-arched openings and 20th-century inserted windows. Notably, there is a fine cantilevered straight flight of external stairs leading to the outer walls of the cross wings.
