Description
The garden wall surrounding Royd House, built in the early 20th century, incorporates features from the earlier house constructed in 1636, with parts of its original walls still intact.
On the side facing the road, there is a Tudor-style doorway with an elaborate surround, alongside a larger doorway of a similar design, both featuring the initials "WM: AM" carved in the spandrels. The moulding of the surround does not extend all the way down the jambs, indicating that this may have been a re-used fireplace.
To the south, the wall is made of large dressed stones and includes two large double chamfered mullion and transom windows with hoodmoulds, consisting of nine and seven lights, as well as two blocked doorways—one with a chamfer and the other with an architrave.
On the east side, the wall features a blocked chamfered doorway and three double chamfered cross windows. The original house was demolished to allow for the construction of the current, smaller house in 1910, but photographs of the earlier structure still exist.
