Description

Farnhill Hall is a manor house from the 15th century that has been significantly altered in the 16th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of rubble with slate roofs, hipped at the right end. The building is now two storeys high but was originally a one-storey hall with a chamber block and kitchen block at either end, arranged in a single range. The hall is marked by four turrets, two on each front. It features paired tall trefoil-headed lights, with two pairs still visible to the right of the doorway. The doorway itself is an early 20th-century Gothic design, protected by a small gabled machicolated dormer. On the right block, there is a blocked two-light round-headed window on the ground floor and a blocked doorway facing the hall roof, which may have once served lost battlements. The rear windows are mostly from the 19th or early 20th centuries, featuring slightly arched heads and are primarily sash windows. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a large elliptical-headed fireplace and early 20th-century woodwork by Robert Thompson of Kilburn. Despite its alterations, Farnhill Hall is a rare example of a fortified manor house built in a single range, making it worthy of its high grade.
