Description
The Old Barn and The Cottage is a barn and carriage house that have been converted into two houses. The barn dates back to 1671 and was likely built for Hugh Currer, with the cottage added shortly after. There have been late 20th-century alterations and conversions. The structure is made of coursed gritstone rubble and features a graduated stone slate roof. The barn has five bays, while the cottage has two bays, both with an inserted upper storey in the roof space. Notable architectural features include quoins and a chamfered plinth.
The barn has a large central cart entrance with chamfered quoined jambs and voussoirs. There are end byre doorways with chamfered jambs and a lintel, the right lintel displaying raised lettering that reads "R/H C 1671". The barn also has two original chamfered square windows, four windows inserted in the 19th century, and three more added during the conversion in 1979.
To the right, the cottage features a chamfered surround to the door on the left and an unsympathetic inserted window opening on the ground floor. The right return of the cottage has a large carriage arch with chamfered voussoirs that is now blocked, with a three-light window inserted. There is also a three-light flat-faced mullion window on the first floor. Both gables have kneelers with pyramidal finials and gable copings. A 20th-century stack is positioned forward of the ridge on The Cottage. The roof extends down as a porch over the barn entrance, supported by wooden beams. The interior of the barn is reported to contain original timber roofing, though it was not seen during the resurvey. The Cottage is included in the listing for its group value.
