Description

This is a large house, likely dating from the early 17th century, although a datestone bearing the inscription “1537” has been altered and is believed to be inaccurate. It is constructed of dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The front facade has three wide gables projecting from a continuous roof extended into a wing on the right. Each gable has coped verges, kneelers at the very ends, and finials at the apex. Each gable stands over a double-chamfered window on each floor, except between the second and third gables, where a former two-light window may have served to light the main chimney, and a small cupboard window is located above. The ground floor windows have 5, 5 (lacking mullions), and 3 lights respectively; the upper floor windows have 4, 4, and 3 lights, all with hood moulds. The outer doorways are 19th century, and the central doorway has been re-cut, displaying the date "1537" and initials RS and ES within the spandrels. There are two chimneys: a square stack, now castellated, beyond the main body of the house to the left, and another located between the second and third bays. The wing to the right is now used as a barn and incorporates a 19th-century outshut flush with the front facade. The gable end of this wing has a double-chamfered mullion window, now lacking its mullions. The rear wall has been extensively rebuilt with a cart entry into the barn section. The interior has been completely altered.
