6/48 Nos 32 and 34 (The Petch House) with attached stone steps and wall to right - II

House, now 2 dwellings. 1785, with C19 extension; subdivided and extended in C20. Built for John Petch, lawyer. Orange-red brick in Flemish bond to front, on stone plinth; rendered to rear; sandstone return fronts and extension. Ashlar dressings; pantile roof; stone stacks. Central stairhall plan, 2 rooms deep, with later extension to left. 3-storeys, 3 bays. Raised quoins. Original door with 6 raised and fielded panels and transverse fluting in the margins removed to C20 extension to left. Original door opening retains Doric pedimented doorcase wih engaged columns and is blocked with a C20 fixed light window with glazing bars. 12-pane sashes in raised, squared surrounds throughout. First and second floor raised bands; moulded eaves cornice. End stacks to swept, hipped roof. To rear: central half-glazed door under a blind patterned fanlight, in an Ionic doorcase of open pediment with pulvinated frieze on part-fluted engaged columns. Narrow 2-storey pointed staircase windows to right with Gothick glazing. 3-storey canted bay at end right. Interior: C18 cut- string, dogleg staircase to rear of hall, with turned balusters and shaped cheek-pieces. Hall divided on first and second floors by moulded elliptical arches on fluted pilasters. Original, reset, chimneypieces to first floor rooms on left. Short flight of stone steps at end right, with ramped-up orange-red brick wall in English garden wall bond, stone coping and pier.
