Description

This is a house, now divided, built around 1855 for Mrs. Patten. It is constructed from ashlar Ham stone with a slate roof, displaying gabled front elevations and astragal-moulded verges. A dentil cornice runs along the recessed centre between the gable ends, complemented by ashlar stacks featuring dentil cornices and recessed panels. The house was designed in an Italian villa style, based on a square block with recessed centres on all fronts, and including a service wing to the north.

The original layout comprised a two-storey design, with 2:3:2 bays. The windows are 8-pane sashes set within raised, flat surrounds. The first floor outer bays feature semi-circular keystones linking the windows, supported by consoles with carved linked chain decoration, forming shallow balconies. Ground floor arcaded surrounds link the outer bay windows with keystones. The centre of the building presents a flat-roofed, three-bay ashlar arcade with a cross-vaulted ceiling. A panelled double door, with a fanlight and etched glass sidelights, is centrally positioned, concealed behind inner double doors with etched glass. The garden front mirrors this design, except for empty niches that flank the central, glazed double doors. These are obscured by a 20th-century glazed wooden verandah. A flat-roofed, single-bay wing, with matching fenestration, extends to the left. The north front has been significantly altered.

Inside, a central stair hall features a dog-leg staircase with a mahogany handrail, a cut string, and a black and white marble floor. Contemporary panelled doors, moulded plaster cornices, and gilded pelmets are also original features.
