Description

Rumwell Cottages are a group of almshouses, now private dwellings, built in 1912. They feature a roughcast exterior with a central gable that has a half-timbered apex, fronting a hipped bell cast roof. The roof is covered with diamond pane asbestos slates, and the eaves overhang, supported by twisted wrought iron sprockets. There are large central rendered chimney stacks, one on the left and one at the left gable end.

The cottages are designed in the Arts and Crafts style and consist of single cell units with an asymmetrical front. They are two storeys high and have four bays. The original leaded casement windows are largely intact, with flat-roofed 2-light dormer casements flanking a central 4-light casement at the gable end. Similar windows are found below, along with 2-light mullioned and transomed windows in the outer bays. Some leading has been partially removed from the left, and the windows in the left bay have been renewed.

The entrances feature raking buttresses and round-headed arches in the outer bays of the central gable, while the left and right entrances have square heads, with the right one containing an inserted rectangular light above. All entrances have cantilevered hoods suspended from twisted wrought iron chains and are accessed through plank doors. A central circular plaque displays the initials CLF and is dated 1912.
