Description
Grant's Farmhouse is a late medieval farmhouse, said to be dated 1608 on the south gable end, which has been extensively altered, with the north gable end largely rebuilt in the late 20th century. The building is roughcast with a thatched roof and features brick stacks on the left gable end and to the left of the cross passage. The plan includes an open hall that has been ceiled to three levels and a cross passage. The farmhouse is one and a half storeys high and consists of three bays. On the left, there are two early 19th century leaded iron casements in an eyebrow dormer, while the right has a renewed metal casement in an eyebrow dormer. The ground floor includes two 20th century three-light casements on the left and one on the right of a 20th century plank door with bull's eye glass, along with a thatched roughcast porch. Although the interior was not seen, it is said to contain an early use of brick for an inserted cross passage fireplace with an unusually complete moulded lintel without stops, a six-panel steeply chamfered compartment ceiling, and a shouldered doorway leading into a wattle and daub partition at the upper end. A plank and muntin screen with remnants of floral decoration was removed when the lower end was partly rebuilt. There is evidence that prior to restoration, the house contained both true and jointed cruck trusses, but now only the latter and an uncommon cusped truss with a triangular yoked apex remain.
