Description
Catherine House is a house located in Bransdale, North Yorkshire, dating from the late 18th century, though it has earlier origins. It underwent extensions and alterations, likely in the 19th century, and was built for George Petch. The structure is made of roughly-tooled sandstone, which includes some reused herringbone-tooled sandstone, and features a pantile roof with brick stacks, one of which has been rebuilt.
Originally, the house had a two-cell, gable-entry plan with a later extension set back to the right. The extension has a board door with a roughly tooled lintel. Although the windows are currently boarded up, three-light casements remain on the interior, with three panes on the ground floor and two panes on the first floor, all featuring roughly herringbone-tooled lintels and tiled sills. A reset datestone inscribed "G:P:1757" is located beside the right window on the ground floor. The extension has a coped gable.
Inside, the ground-floor room to the right contains an inglenook fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer and heck. Above, on the first floor, there is a massive stone firehood. The house was unoccupied at the time of the resurvey.
