Description

Low South House Farmhouse is a late 18th-century farmhouse with a later extension. It is constructed from herringbone-tooled sandstone and features a pantile roof. The original layout consists of a two-cell direct-entry plan with a rear service extension. The building is two stories high and has a two-window front. There is a 20th-century door located in the rear extension.

The ground floor has three-light, three-pane casements, while the first floor has similar two-pane casements, all set in unaltered openings. Each window has painted stone sills and tooled long lintels with incised diagonally-tooled wedges. The eaves are stepped, and the gables are coped with shaped kneelers. There are end stacks, and the rear extension features roughly tooled lintels, a coped gable, and a shaped kneeler. The rear side includes a two-light, large-pane horizontal sliding sash window on the first floor.

Inside, the house remains largely unaltered except for some replacement fireplaces. The ground floor showcases square section beaded joists that are exposed. There is a boxed staircase, which is panelled below, located along the back wall of the entrance room. An original plank door with a six-panel frame is pegged between the service extension and the main house. Other doors consist of six raised and fielded panels, with the one beneath the stairs featuring an H-L hinge.
