Description

West Hill Cottages is a house that has been converted into three cottages. It dates from the mid-18th century and was altered in the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed dressed gritstone and features a Westmorland slate roof. It has two storeys and two bays, with a lower two-storey, two-bay block on the right side. The corners of the building have quoins.

The central doorway has been blocked and now features an alternate quoined surround with a plain lintel, which contains a two-light window. To the left of this, a 19th-century panelled door and a four-pane window have been inserted into the original window opening. To the right, there is a three-light window with a wooden frame and mullions, and a similar window is located on the first floor to the right. The left side has a side-sliding sash window with eight panes. The original windows are set in plain stone surrounds.

The building has shaped kneelers, gable coping, and corniced end stacks. The lower two-storey block on the right may have originally served as a service range and features a four-panel half-glazed door to the left, along with one ground-floor window and two first-floor windows, all with two-light casements. There is an additional range attached to the rear of the building.
