Description
Red Gables is a house that has been converted into two cottages. It is likely a 16th-century timber building that was encased in stone in the 17th century and had its windows updated in the early 19th century. The structure is made of coursed rubble with a red tile roof and consists of one storey with attics, featuring four bays and a rear outshut.
The building has a plinth and a half-glazed 20th-century door in bay three. To the left of the door, there is a window with a double chamfer on the left jamb and an 8-pane side-sliding sash. A similar window to the right of the door has a wooden lintel. Bay two has a 20th-century door with two 20th-century windows to the left. There are also two small gabled dormers and a large central ridge stack, along with smaller stacks at each end.
At the rear, there is a two-light recessed chamfered mullion window under the eaves on the right, two small 19th-century openings in bay one, and two dormers. The left return features a blocked two-light recessed chamfered mullion window. The interior has not been inspected in detail during the resurvey, but there is a spine beam in bay one and two posts in the rear wall that suggest it was originally a rear-aisled building. It has been reported to contain crucks.
