Description

MARKET PLACE 1. 5340 (South Side) Nos 40 and 41 SE 7984 1/304 SE 7984 2/304 II GV 2. Large early C19 building of 3 storeys in brick. 5 bays, that in centre being blank and with pilasters. 4 windows, lunettes to top floor, of 3 lights, hung sashes with glazing bars. 1st floor windows in double recess, with stucco head to centre light, side lights narrower, glazing bars to centre only. Ground floor to left obscured by modern extension of 1 storey to bank premises. To right, 2 windows as above and doorway with plain pilasters and cornice. Door of 6 panels. Centre ground floor has passage entry with narrow stone surround with round arched head with triple keystone. Iron standards to area. Said to have been built with profits from whaling trade.

Nos 15 and 16, 16A, 17 to 23 (consec) 33 to 38 (consec) and St George's House, form a group with Nos 40 to 48 (consec) of which Nos 16, 17, 19, 23 and 25, 35 and 36, 38 and 47 and 48 are buildings of local interest.
