Description

40 and 41 Market Place is a large early 19th century building that stands three storeys high and is constructed of brick. It features five bays, with the central bay being blank and adorned with pilasters. The building has four windows on the upper floors, with lunettes on the top floor. The windows are of three lights and are hung sashes with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are set in double recesses, with a stucco head above the central light; the side lights are narrower and have glazing bars only on the centre light. The ground floor to the left is obscured by a modern one-storey extension for bank premises. To the right, there are two windows similar to those above, along with a doorway framed by plain pilasters and a cornice. The door consists of six panels. The centre of the ground floor has a passage entry with a narrow stone surround that has a round arched head featuring a triple keystone. There are iron standards in the area. It is said that this building was constructed with profits from the whaling trade.

Nos 15 and 16, 16A, 17 to 23 (consecutive), and 33 to 38 (consecutive), along with St George's House, form a group with Nos 40 to 48 (consecutive), of which Nos 16, 17, 19, 23, and 25, as well as 35 and 36, 38, and 47 and 48, are buildings of local interest.
