Description
The White Swan Hotel is an 18th-century building located on the north side of Market Place. It stands two storeys high with attics, constructed from coursed stone on a plain plinth. The building features a mansard roof made of Welsh slate, which is topped with three tall stacks and four dormer windows. The side of the hotel is brick.
On the first floor, there are four windows that are hung sashes with glazing bars, set beneath stone lintels with triple keystones. An inn sign bracket made of wrought iron, decorated with a bunch of grapes, is also present. The ground floor includes a flat-arched carriage entry to the left, alongside one window that is also a hung sash with glazing bars and a keystone. The entrance door consists of six fielded panels. To the right, there is a bowed window with three lights, which are hung sashes with glazing bars and a moulded cornice.
In the basement, there are remains of early stone passages and a door. A 19th-century extension is located at the rear of the building. The White Swan Hotel, along with the premises occupied by York County Savings Bank, and the adjacent buildings, form a group with The Bay Horse Public House and other nearby properties, with some of these being of local interest.
