Description
St George's House is an 18th-century building located on the south side of Market Place. It features a gable end facing the road and is constructed of coursed stone with a pantile roof. The roof has three stone-coped verges with kneelers and is topped by brick chimney stacks. The gable end includes one hung sash window with glazing bars on both floors, as well as a rectangular bay window on the ground floor.
The west elevation has three windows serving two separate occupancies, predominantly hung sashes with glazing bars. The windows in the southern occupancy are adorned with stone lintels featuring keystones. A band runs between the storeys, and the ground floor has similar windows. The building is accented by rusticated quoins and a cavetto moulded eaves cornice. St George's House was formerly known as the George Hotel.
This building forms part of a group with Nos 15 and 16, 16A, 17 to 23 (consecutive), and 33 to 38 (consecutive), as well as Nos 40 to 48 (consecutive), with several of these buildings recognized as having local interest.
