Description

This is an 18th-century block of cottages with a rear carriageway originally serving the Black Swan Hotel in Birdgate. The building is constructed of coursed stone with a pantile roof, featuring four brick stacks and coped gable ends with kneelers. The front has a blocked window above a flat carriageway entrance on the left side. There are five other windows: Nos. 43 and 44 have casement windows with glazing bars, while the rest have modern four-light mullion and transom windows. The ground floor windows of Nos. 43 and 44 retain glazing bars, the others are modern and all have wood lintels. Modern doors are also topped with wood lintels. Numbers 29-31 (Pickering United Reformed Church), the railings and gates in the courtyard, Numbers 33-47, and Numbers 49-52 form a group.
