Description

CLAPHAM-CUM-NEWBY NEWBY SD 76 NW 7/10 Newby Hall and barn adjoining 20.2.58 - II Farmhouse. C15 with C17, C18, C19 and C20 alterations. Coursed rubble, stone dressings, stone slate roof. L-shaped plan with main block north-south and small wing at north-east end. C20 outshut in angle and wing to west with C17 origins. South front of west wing contains right-hand C20 entrance. To the right is projecting south gable end, 2 storeys, 1 bay. Ground floor C20 2- light flat faced mullioned window, casements, remains of broader C18 window in stonework. In upper floor is deepened 2-light Perpendicular window with chamfered surround and trefoil heads to both lights and incised spandrels, mullion now gone, C20 casements. Roof raised at eaves, probably in C19. Quoins, badly weathered crocketed finials. Central ridge stack. To right is outshut with C20 ground floor entrance and re-used C17 single-light chamfered window on upper floor. East gabled wing, 2 storeys, 1 bay. Small ground floor window with basket-arched head. In gable is 2-light window with trefoil heads and Perpendicular tracery; pointed hoodmould. Mullion now gone; C20 casements. Quoins. Cap to ridge, probably for finial. In left-hand return is small window with chamfered surround. North gable end, 2 storeys, 1 bay. On upper floor is badly weathered 2-light window with trefoil heads similar to that in south gable; C20 casements. To right is stair window, possibly C18 with C20 surround. Quoins. Weathered crocketed finial. Adjoining barn C19 and C20 with C17 origins. South front incorporates re-used c. mid C16 wooden lintel carved with 3 stylised Tudor flowers in bas-relief; painted. In north front is C17 chamfered surround to left-hand entrance.
